The youth group went to King's Island this summer!  On June 30th a sizeable group of teens and adults left out at 6:00 AM and returned between 3 and 4 AM July 1st.  What happened in the meantime was a lot of fun on rides, enjoying the water park, but most exciting was the concert:  SPIRIT SONG 2012.
The bands that headlined on the 30th included: Third Day, NEEDTOBREATHE, Family Force 5, Nine Lashes, Sent By Ravens, and the Christian Festival's 2011 Talent Search Contest winner.  Bob Lenz brought a message and the entire event was emceed by comedian Bone Hampton.
It was a trip worth taking and a worship experience with an attitude to carry long after you leaving the park.

Redemption by Christ Jesus our Lord

Examples in the Old Testament:
We were bound by sin, and incapable of paying our ransom, or debt.
Redemption- Is a contractual obligation.  In slave culture that is when certain criteria for emancipation are present.
In the Old Testament, only a relative can redeem a slave from bondage.  (Exodus 6)

This is a type of Christ Jesus Who, being God, came as a man to redeem men from their sin debt.  No animal's blood or any amount of wealth could pay the debt owed.  Just as no other person could by back an Old Testament slave except family, Christ had to come as a member of humanity to redeem humanity.

The ransomer of the slave also had to be debtless himself.  Jesus Christ was sinless, and therefore is able to redeem the lost of their sin debt.

God started the redemption work in the Israelites bondage in Egypt.  They didn't respond because of their destitute and hopeless condition, just like we do in our lives.

Exodus 21
Bond-slave:  If a slave completed the seven years of service the Law allowed for and found he loved his master, then he may become his master's slave forever. The Apostle Paul applied this typology in the New Testament, referring to himself as the Lord Jesus Christ's bond-slave.

Leviticus 25
Everything belongs to God.  Just as children of slaves are slaves, so every one born to parents indebted to sin become indebted themselves.  Also, when a man was redeemed, his children stayed slaves.  So it is that when one is saved it does not mean that his or her family is also saved by that person's redemption.

Hosea 1

God told Hosea to marry Gomer, a prostitute.  Gomer bore two children during the marriage and Hosea didn't believe they were his children.  Gomer eventually left the children with Hosea and ran off with another man.  Hosea loved Gomer and gave money to the other man so that she would have all she needed.  The man eventually kicked Gomer out and she became so destitute that she was placed naked on a market sales block to be sold as a prostitute/slave.  God told Hosea to go to the market and buy back his wife.  In spite of the humiliation of having to bid for his wife in a public display like that, Hosea stood in the market and did as God commanded.

Hosea's story is another type of God's relationship with humanity.  He was willing to suffer the humiliation and pay our debt on the cross, taking our place, so that we might be reunited with Him.  His love was greater than our transgressions and though we were unfaithful, He was compassionate.

Ephesians 1-2 talks of how God in the Lord Jesus Christ reached out and redeemed us from our bondage at a time when we were powerless to do so ourselves.  By God's grace we are saved, through faith, and that not of ourselves, it is the gift of God.  How great is God's love that He would give us everything we need for life and godliness, when we were still His enemies?

                                                                                        LABELS (Luke 13:10-17)

-Used on products and people.  Ex. Michael Jordan-basketball, Mozart-music, Dodge-trucks, etc.
-Sometimes we are labeled based on what has happened to us. Ex. Bernie Madeoff- scammer
-The woman in Luke 13:10-17 was labeled by her infirmity.

The condition of all humanity is one of being bound by sin (Romans 3:23, John 3:36, Ephesians 2:1-12, Psalm 51)
-Our sins need to be removed.
-People try all different means of removing them on their own.
-Only by believing in Jesus Christ as God's Son and accepting His gift of Grace in God can we be saved.
God commands us to repent (Luke 13:1-5)
-The Pharisees believed that tragic events indicated personal sin in the lives of the victims.
-The Lord Jesus Christ makes it clear everyone is in need of repentance.
-Repentance means: A change of mind and direction.  You must agree with God that you're wrong and sinning and then change your habits.  We must
                                            turn from the errant/sinful behavior.
-God grants repentance, that is He brings us to a place of repentance.
Turn from sin, trust in the Lord Jesus Christ as your Savior and Lord

Monday Night BIBLE STUDIES

Precept Ministries

Every Monday night at 2031 Harrison Ave, beginning at 6:30 PM, there is a Bible study that centers around Kay Arthur's Precept Ministries Series.  During the early Spring, Fall, and Winter months these tend to be in a longer book and get very in depth.  During the late Spring and Summer, however, the sessions are in smaller books that are intended to have 40 minute studies.  Though the group usually delves a little deeper into the Scriptures and the study lasts a bit longer.
Preceding each study there is a time of fellowship with  hot and/or chilled dishes and desserts served before the study begins.  All are welcome to come and join the study!

Scripture Passages of the Week

Old Testament

Psalm 107
OLD TESTAMENT PASSAGE Psalm 107 Thanksgiving for God's Deliverance 1 Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; His faithful love endures forever. 2 Let the redeemed of the LORD proclaim that He has redeemed them from the hand of the foe 3 and has gathered them from the lands- from the east and the west, from the north and the south. 4 Some wandered in the desolate wilderness, finding no way to a city where they could live. 5 They were hungry and thirsty; their spirits failed within them. 6 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He rescued them from their distress. 7 He led them by the right path to go to a city where they could live. 8 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for the human race. 9 For He has satisfied the thirsty and filled the hungry with good things. 10 Others sat in darkness and gloom- prisoners in cruel chains- 11 because they rebelled against God's commands and despised the counsel of the Most High. 12 He broke their spirits with hard labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. 13 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. 14 He brought them out of darkness and gloom and broke their chains apart. 15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for the human race. 16 For He has broken down the bronze gates and cut through the iron bars. 17 Fools suffered affliction because of their rebellious ways and their sins. 18 They loathed all food and came near the gates of death. 19 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble; He saved them from their distress. 20 He sent His word and healed them; He rescued them from the Pit. 21 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and for His wonderful works for the human race. 22 Let them offer sacrifices of thanksgiving and announce His works with shouts of joy. 23 Others went to sea in ships, conducting trade on the vast waters. 24 They saw the LORD's works, His wonderful works in the deep. 25 He spoke and raised a tempest that stirred up the waves of sea. 26 Rising up to the sky, sinking down to the depths, their courage melting away in anguish, 27 they reeled and staggered like drunken men, and all their skill was useless. 28 Then they cried out to the LORD in their trouble, and He brought them out of their distress. 29 He stilled the storm to a murmur, and the waves of the sea were hushed. 30 They rejoiced when the waves grew quiet. Then He guided them to the harbor they longed for. 31 Let them give thanks to the LORD for His faithful love and His wonderful works for the human race. 32 Let them exalt Him in the assembly of the people and praise Him in the council of the elders. 33 He turns rivers into desert springs of water into thirsty ground, 34 and fruitful land into salty wasteland, because of the wickedness of its inhabitants. 35 He turns a desert into a pool of water, dry land into springs of water. 36 He causes the hungry to settle there, and they establish a city where they can live. 37 They sow fields and plant vineyards that yield a fruitful harvest. 38 He blesses them, and they multiply greatly; He does not let their livestock decrease. 39 When they are diminished and are humbled by cruel oppression and sorrow, 40 He pours out contempt on nobles and makes them waner in trackless wastelands. 41 But He lifts the needy out of their suffering and makes their families multiply like flocks. 42 The upright see it and rejoice, and all injustice shuts its mouth. 43 Let whoever is wise pay attention to these things and consider the LORD's acts of faithful love. World Changers
Coming Soon!

The World Changers are coming to the Charleston area soon!  During the second week of July, teenagers from around the country, middle school to college age, will be arriving in a group to do free work around the Charleston area.  The summer volunteer ministry happens every year around the nation and these dedicated youths need our help!  We have been asked to donate water, Gatorade, and Little Debbie desserts for our local group.  You can drop them off in foyer underneath the missions table by the water fountain.  If you would like to help deliver these items or other goods throughout the week 10:30 AM is preparation time for delivery at the church and items are taken from 11:30 - 12:00.  Above all keep the teens and their group leaders in your prayers as they work and serve the Lord during their summer vacation!

It's getting closer!  The Crossing will be hosting its yearly Vacation Bible School the week of July 10th-15th from 6:00- 8:30 pm!  This year's theme is Following In His Footsteps and its motto its  memory verse is Romans 10:9 : "If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."  The first night, Sunday is going to be a VBS "EGG"stravaganza and Block Party from 4-7 pm at the Harrison Avenue Campus. Pre-registration will also be held at this time and registration during the week is permitted as well.
Every evening of VBS a dinner will be held for workers and attendees at 6:00 PM before the fun begins at 6:30!
During the week the kids will be learning about the Lord Jesus through fun music, crafts, Bible stories, and some recreational activities (hopefully outside)!  Also throughout the week kids will have a chance to learn about some missionaries the church is involved with and even some ways they can help spread the Gospel in far away places!
The last night is a family night with a cookout, inflatable rides, and a chance for parents to see what the kids have done throughout the week.
Whether you're a member or not, come, bring  your kids and have fun at VBS 2011!  Kids from pre-school to high school can attend and parents are welcome to stay and help as well.  You're never too old to participate in VBS, and as someone who was saved during VBS I know it's a wonderful time to hear the Gospel.  Keep this week and all the workers and kids in your prayers and may the Lord bless this year's VBS!
1 I speak the truth in Christ—I am not lying, my conscience confirms it through the Holy Spirit— 2 I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. 3 For I could wish that I myself were cursed and cut off from Christ for the sake of my people, those of my own race, 4 the people of Israel. Theirs is the adoption to sonship; theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the law, the temple worship and the promises. 5 Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of the Messiah, who is God over all, forever praised! Amen. 6 It is not as though God’s word had failed. For not all who are descended from Israel are Israel. 7 Nor because they are his descendants are they all Abraham’s children. On the contrary, “It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned.” 8 In other words, it is not the children by physical descent who are God’s children, but it is the children of the promise who are regarded as Abraham’s offspring. 9 For this was how the promise was stated: “At the appointed time I will return, and Sarah will have a son.”

10 Not only that, but Rebekah’s children were conceived at the same time by our father Isaac. 11 Yet, before the twins were born or had done anything good or bad—in order that God’s purpose in election might stand: 12 not by works but by him who calls—she was told, “The older will serve the younger.” 13 Just as it is written: “Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.”

14 What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! 15 For he says to Moses,

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy,
and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.”

16 It does not, therefore, depend on human desire or effort, but on God’s mercy. 17 For Scripture says to Pharaoh: “I raised you up for this very purpose, that I might display my power in you and that my name might be proclaimed in all the earth.” 18 Therefore God has mercy on whom he wants to have mercy, and he hardens whom he wants to harden. (Romans 9:1-18, New International Version)
